If you are looking for a fairly low cost hobby that you can show off in your everyday life, this one is for you. Here’s how I got on with it.
I got into embroidery with a children’s kit that I picked up for cheap from the reduced section in a local art store. The instructions were missing (hence the reduction) so I went onto Instagram, and watched people’s videos on there ("Slow Evenings Embroidery” was my favourite as she worked in the style I loved).
To be fully honest, it was kind of carnage. I didn’t understand that I had to split the threads, and I sewed part of the fabric to itself by accident. All-round chaos. At one point my needle broke and I had to replace it with another cheap needle I grabbed at the supermarket. Look at this;
That said, it tremendously fun- and doable when listening to podcasts, or my vinyl, or watching tv- two hobby birds with one stone. Plus the finished results were adorable! Look at my unicorn!

Try it Once or Twice?
This is definitely a try twice. Once I saw my cute little unicorn, all my previous woes melted away. Plus I had leftover thread, my new needles, and some old pillowcases to practice on. I didn’t have to spend much more than possibly getting new thread. I grabbed a gel pen to draw a design on some cut up pillowcases and got to work.
A work in progress
Overall, I highly recommend this. It’s (mostly) easy to start with, and the more you do the more powerful you feel. Like maybe I’ll embroider my jeans next or something. Grab a cheap little kit (look out for one in charity/thrift shops or discount stores to really keep the cost down), and go for it. Try it once <3
Cost: minimal Tries: multiple Recommend: if you want something to fidget with when doing other stuff
